Mixed-Use Development Brings New Coworking With Subsidized Spaces for Artists to Brooklyn’s Gowanus Neighborhood
The Domain Companies announced the opening of a new location of The Shop Workspace at 420 Carroll in Brooklyn. Comprising 12,000 square feet on the building’s second floor, The Shop at 420 Carroll will be the third coworking space under the brand’s flag, joining Salt Lake City and New Orleans locations.
Made possible by the 2021 Gowanus Mix rezoning and in partnership with Arts Gowanus, The Shop will offer subsidized space for local artists and reduced-cost community offerings, in addition to traditional, open-space coworking and private offices for freelancers, entrepreneurs and growing businesses. Seven studios will be awarded to local artists in a lottery system, and six Gowanus Mix studios will be available at a reduced cost for local businesses. Both space types involve year-long, renewable commitments.
“The Shop at 420 Carroll encapsulates the innovative and thoughtful design we bring to each of our projects, combining the grassroots efforts of Arts Gowanus and the vibrant and one-of-a-kind, place-based community that truly serves our residents,” said Matt Schwartz, co-CEO of The Domain Companies.
The flex workspaces at The Shop offer monthly memberships for common space access and/or private offices, while conference rooms and event spaces are also available with day passes or hourly bookings. Amenities include on-site storage space, shared common areas, meeting spaces, phone booths, a staffed reception area and an office kitchen. The Shop also offers mail and business services; company branding opportunities in offices; and a pet-friendly policy.
The property at 420 Carroll — the mixed-use, mixed-rate development that will accommodate The Shop — is conveniently situated on the Gowanus waterfront. Two blocks from the Union Street R train subway station, the location ensures easy access to the city and is within walking distance of Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Park Slope and downtown Brooklyn.
The development will include a 21-story and an adjacent 16-story tower connected by a subterranean tunnel. Scheduled for opening in early 2025, the project is set to bring 360 new studio to three-bedroom homes to the Gowanus neighborhood, 90 of which are reserved for families earning between 40% and 100% of the area median income, and will be allotted through an affordable housing lottery.
