The Malin Expands in Flatiron with 3,000-Square-Foot Coworking Sublease

The Malin has signed a sublease for 33,000 square feet at 895 Broadway in preparation of the launch of a new boutique coworking space on the top two stories of the historic Flatiron-district building.

The location will feature a 2,700-square-foot mezzanine along with desks, private offices and other facilities. The lower three stories of the building, which also includes 897 and 899 Broadway, are currently occupied by Equinox.

Irish furniture designer Ciaran McGuigan — who’s known for his skill in creating elegant, sophisticated spaces — founded The Malin. This month, the company opened its second location at 387 Park Ave. within TF Cornerstone. It’s anticipated that the Flatiron outpost will debut in the spring.

The blog “Daytonian in Manhattan” notes that the building between East 19th and East 20th streets was formerly a Lord & Taylor store built in the 1860s. It originally featured a cast iron facade for $500,000. The grand opening in 1870 drew thousands of shoppers with hand-hoisted elevators transporting them between floors.

Then, in 1914, the building was renamed the Calhoun, Robbins & Co. building after being leased by the company.  Decades later, in 1984, clothing manufacturer Saint Laurie purchased the building for $2 million and invested further in renovations.

When Equinox leased the building in 1993, it converted the top two floors into offices and the first three levels into a gym. Most recently, in the wake of the pandemic’s disruption of the office market, demand for coworking spaces surged as companies sought flexible choices to quickly scale their office footprints.
