Why Breakrooms Are Essential in Workplaces

How many times have you felt the day spinning away out of your control and the only thing you could do was to mutter a heartfelt, “Stop the world and let me off!” While there may be jobs out there that aren’t laden with stress, they are few and far between. This is perhaps one of the main reasons why breakrooms are as important as they are and why they are essential in workplaces.
Even taking just a few minutes away from the stress of the moment can be enough to get you back on track. However, stress is just one of the reasons why breakrooms are as important as they are. In fact, sometimes why they are essential isn’t as important as how they meet those needs.
A Place for a Bit of Camaraderie
In recent years, many employers have been working toward a team-minded corporate culture. Having a breakroom gives teams a chance to get to know each other better and many have taken to playing some of the more popular breakroom games. Here they set up a competition, but a competition of a different sort. Instead of seeing who is going to win employee of the month, employees do battle in:
- Table tennis
- Board games
- Chess
- Checkers
- Jigsaw puzzles
Sometimes it’s a member of one team competing against a member of another team while other times it’s a game that is played team against team. Jigsaw puzzles and word games like Scrabble are perfect games for the team against the team. Playing breakroom games is a fun way to establish camaraderie while giving employees both a mental and physical break before heading back out to their respective jobs.
Time to Give the Brain a Rest
That leads us to another very good reason why breakrooms are essential in today’s workplaces. Sometimes it’s not the physical labor that tires you at work. Quite often you just need to give the brain a rest.
Efficient Use of Break Time
How many days have you gone without eating a proper meal at lunchtime? Most often this is simply because there is simply not enough time to get out to the nearest takeaway shop while having time to eat what you’ve bought. Having a well-equipped breakroom enables staff to quickly heat their lunch in a microwave if necessary and ample time to eat before returning to the floor.
Appreciation for Employee Efforts
Everyone likes to know they are appreciated, and it is vitally important for workers to know the company they work for appreciates all that they do. Sometimes it’s something as simple as giving your staff a place to enjoy a much-needed break that expresses your appreciation. Once you’ve seen vending machines, coffee makers, and a few breakroom games, your staff know that you actually care about them as people rather than a number in your bottom line. In the end, if you want to raise company morale while improving productivity, that breakroom can be the element that brings it all together.
