Co-working – Why is it so important?

Working together as a group can be vital to a project and working with people from other companies can be just as vital. It can be even more important that you have the right space to work in so that everyone feels comfortable to produce the best work that they can. In this modern world it is important that people feel valued and respected so that they do not feel intimidated for thinking of an idea.

An article from the Harvard Business Review describes co-working as a: “membership-based workspaces where diverse groups of freelancers, remote workers, and other independent professionals work together in a shared, communal setting.”

In any business the CEOs are demanding that their workers have co-working workspaces to work in. Ever since the idea of co-working was created in 1995 by hackers in Berlin it has been integrated into many businesses. They wanted to be all in one places sharing ideas, working as one and complete tasks together.

American game designer Bernard DeKoven stated that it is “working together as equals”. He is exactly right because of the safe environment that the companies create. With several different co-working spaces available such as open workspaces, private workspaces, industry-specific and venture/incubators no need is unmet for businesses.

Co- working spaces are not what you think they might be with some people assuming that they are a dingy office space where time has been forgotten. Far from it indeed. It is becoming the most vital thing a company can do to make their workers feel valued. Companies are incorporating their spaces with gym facilities, wellbeing centres and making them accessible by public transport.

It is creating a sense of community for people working in these spaces and a place where people want to help a business or start their own. Co-working is known to increase networking between companies, reduce loneliness, set off creative sparks and create chances for collaboration.

Coming in 2022, Chicago will have a new athletic resort and co-working facility incorporated for workers in the city. According to Club Industry, “Life Time Work will feature live plants, natural light, ergonomic workstations, healthy food and beverage offerings and a Life Time Athletic membership.” This workspace idea will make an employee for likely to go into the office and work more productively with colleagues and freelancers whilst keeping their wellbeing in a good state.

With the pandemic in 2020, there were concerns for the office workspace and how will people connect together remotely. However, co-working platforms such as DropDesk were becoming ever more popular prior to the pandemic to help bridge the gap between physical workspaces and online ones.

Office workspaces were still seen as vital when it was safer for people to return to the office. With people either deciding to work remotely or forced to due to lockdown restrictions, the physical co-working workspace was seen as a good alternative for people once they felt safe to return to the office.

The boom is not expected to stop. There is an estimated 20,000 dedicated co working spaces in the world and it is estimated to grow at a rate of 20% each year. The reason for this is simple. There is a demand for it and the demands can be met. People are benefitting from the low cost co-working spaces and businesses state they are thriving from people working in the co-working spaces.
